My name is Lorna, and I live in Bishopbriggs with my daughter, Emily. My sewing journey began with my mum, Betty, who worked as a dressmaker in the 1940s and 50s before becoming a stay at home mum. I have fond memories of sewing on mum’s treadle Singer and a 1970s Jones machine that came in a teal floral carry case. Mum always made most of my clothes, something I did not fully appreciate as a teenager, and sewed all of our wedding dresses.
Mum taught me to make clothes, too but her other great pleasure was making rag dolls and toys. I still have some of the ones she made for me over 50 years ago. In the days before the internet, she supplemented the household income with orders she got by word of mouth and, if I was looking for extra spending money, she would give some of the orders to me. As a young adult, and later a working mum, I didn’t sew very much, though I always enjoyed knitting and other crafts. In July 2023, a year after we lost mum, I bought a handmade rabbit in a blue floral dress at a craft fair in Culross. That rabbit evoked so many emotions and rekindled my love for sewing. I feel closest to my memories of mum when I am working with fabric.
Inspired by these sentiments, I started my small business, named after the first sewing machine I ever owned. I love to craft items that can become part of a family’s story and traditions, toys that can be played with and loved and things for the home that can be brought out year after year and passed from generation to generation.
