I love pottering around and have worked with clay on and off for nearly forty years. Focusing on an idea, away from everyday concerns, grounds and recharges me. I was first introduced to ceramics at secondary school in East Dunbartonshire, where I spent lunchtimes trying to master wheel throwing. Though not initially successful, my joy for creating with clay blossomed in my mid-twenties at a local high school in Kilsyth. There, I took an Art higher in hand-building ceramics and discovered my love of organic shapes, drawing inspiration from nature.
I was saddened when the school shifted from ceramics to photography. At Glasgow Metropolitan College I learned about glazing techniques, mould making, and sculpture, enjoying the company of fellow students and sharing ideas. I still have sketches from that time waiting to be translated into clay.
My work role eventually changed, requiring national travel, and I had to give up ceramics for several years. When my travel reduced, I found an evening class run by a professional potter in Fintry. She encouraged me to sell my creations. I was overwhelmed when she loved a small wall vase I produced and bought it for her kitchen.
